Is there a solution to using solutions?
Want to improve your business writing?

Dear Tony

Welcome

Hello and welcome to my first newsletter of 2010.

When a client asks me to help them with their newsletter, I always impress the importance of sending it out regularly and on time. It’s ironic then that mine used to go out late or worse still, not at all. Or is it ironic?

Ironic is one of those often misused words, so the main article this issue is about how to use it correctly.

And actually my newsletter does go out on time now – thanks to Rona Wheeldon of The Organised PA.  Not only does Rona proofread my newsletters, she also helps me stick to a timetable!

It’s just so ironic

Let’s start with a little sing-song. All together now…

“It's like rain on your wedding day
It's a free ride when you've already paid
It's the good advice that you just didn't take

And isn't it ironic ... don't you think?”

Well, no actually I don’t. Bad luck – yes. Ironic – no. So when should you use the word ironic? Read on…

Is there a solution to using solutions?

Solutions is one of the most over-used and ridiculed words used in marketing and advertising. But it’s still going strong.

I loved this recent blog post from Clare Lynch of DAC Creative on the very subject. I've included the link here so you can enjoy it too.

DAC Creative is a small communications agency providing design and writing services to a wide range of clients, from financial services firms to governmental organisations. Clare’s blog is called goodcopybadcopy. Sign up for her posts – they’re always entertaining.

Want to improve your business writing?

My good friend and fellow copywriter Sarah Turner and I have started a training company called Turner Swift Training.

Both of us have run training courses and seminars in the past on helping people improve their writing skills. But we think working together will mean a more comprehensive workshop for our delegates. It will be more fun too!

And having fun while you learn is important. Humour helps to make points stick. So we solemnly promise not to be the grammar police and to make our delegates smile as they learn.

The workshops are tailored to each company but will cover the basics such as punctuation, how to write reports that get read, and how to write clear, unambiguous letters and emails.

Come and see what we’re all about on March 22nd at Warren House, Kingston, Surrey. We’ll be running a Writing for Business workshop as part of the Getting the Best out of People programme which is being organised by Lesley Vaughan of Business for Breakfast. Other workshops on the day include:

· Understanding people better both in business and personally.

· Presenting your company and yourself with confidence.

· Making sure your brand says the right thing about you.

And you can attend all these workshops including the Writing for Business workshop run by Turner Swift for only £145.00.

Please email me for more details on Turner Swift Training or the Getting the Best out of People programme.

And please pass our details on to companies you know who would like a little help with their writing skills.
